Airbnb and the Promise of the Spare Bedroom
Nicole Dieker

I’m an Airbnb host and I love it! Husband and I rent out our house a couple weekends per month. Applying for our city license (we’re in Austin) was annoying and required a lot of time and paperwork, but it was worth it. The only serious work involved is the cleaning…we’re pretty neat already, but the house needs to be immaculate for guests. (I’ve thought about outsourcing that to a cleaning company, but I’d rather have the extra $$). We make $600-$800 per month….probably not enough to finance a “dream business,” whatever that means, but it will pay for a vacation next year. We like to travel on the weekends anyway, so it hasn’t been a huge inconvenience to clear out and go camping or visit our friends or whatever.
