What can you learn from a silly piece of plastic?

When my children were younger, I had a business doing magic shows for birthday parties, preschools, and libraries. It was great fun and I enjoyed it immensely.

When I tried to produce a bunny and a rubber chicken showed up instead, it always got a laugh. (The bunny did finally appear in case you’re wondering.)

When researching this article, I wondered about the history of the rubber chicken. Wikipedia offered little help:

“The origin of the rubber chicken is obscure, but it is possibly based on the use of inflated pig bladders attached to sticks and used as props or mock weapons by jesters in the days before the development of plastic and latex. Chicken corpses were readily available; therefore jesters could employ them as variations of slapsticks.”

Wait a minute. The body parts of dead chickens were used as comedy props? Talk about dark comedy. Thank goodness someone invented plastic.

Moving on…

What can we learn from a rubber chicken?

Simple things can be fun

Not every day has to be a trip to Disney World. And if you’ve ever been there in the summer, you know it’s not always as pleasant as you thought…
