Why Do Most Businesses Fail In 2–5 Years?

Here is an answer I gave recently on Quora: OK, so I know that my answer is going to seem less thought out and fantastic sounding than most of the ‘qualified people’ out there…

But I saw this question and I simply had to answer it because I know that everyone is going to start telling you about how there was some technique or trick that everyone SHOULD know in order to win at business but I do not believe that it is true because for every great sounding reason like — you did not know how to build a website, or you did not check to see if there is a good big niche for your business and you did not learn to market and promote effectively and you did not have the right connections and you listened to the wrong people which are all true in their limited way…

The chances are, however, that there are successful, HIGHLY-SUCCESSFUL businesses out there with all the very same flaws and yet, somehow they succeeded where others did not and so I do not think any of those great-sounding reasons are the real reason.

I think the real reason is simply this…

THEY QUIT.

That is it.

Ok, even as I say that, I know it seems too simplistic but it is true though — THEY QUIT!

And please note, I do not include in there, people who choose to transition into something new as they did not quit, they just moved a bit though I imagine the numbers would include them in the startups that failed.

And if I was going to add something extra to the mix here, I would say that those who quit started a business because they saw others making money with it and thought it was viable enough and they dabbled at it.

The quitters did not notice that the people who are successful at it, were actually quite aligned to doing that business — It was within their purpose, calling, strengths and they had a COMPELLING reason to do it.

The quitters also did not see the blood, sweat, tears and downright agony of becoming successful and the fact that you can only go through all of that, if there is more than just making a few bucks on the mind. There has to be a passion, a deep desire to do this business, to influence in this way or else you will simply not stick it out and you will become one of the quitters.

I personally do not think ANYONE has the resilience, tenacity and relentlessness required to get a purely money-driven business off the ground — For those who succeed, there is always a deep down HUGE ‘WHY’ for persisting with it. (Even if that ‘why’ is to prove to all the haters in their childhood that the entrepreneur in question, is worthy — So it may seem money-driven but actually it is about a deep need to prove self-worth)

And so when people come along and just see the success and think they can simply emulate it, they do not see the journey. And if you do not see the journey, or you somehow think it will be easier for you and you tell yourself that you can just make some money quickly with this concept and then the hard times come and stick around so long that you wonder if you will EVER breakthrough, well, you will join the ranks of quitters!

No matter how perfect your marketing was…

No matter how awesome your business plan was…

No matter how amazing your ‘idea’ is and how well suited it is to the marketplace…

If it is not YOUR thing and you have no deep compelling reason to do it, chances are you will quit.

The End.

Would it not be easier to start something you are aligned towards, regardless of how crazy it may seem on the face of it? That way, you will simply keep putting one foot in front of the other, pushing past the obstacles, rolling with the punches, breaking through roadblocks, learning whatever you need to learn when you need to, tweaking it when you need to in order to reach the right people, handling all the fears and insecurities that will rise up as you push past your comfort zone, being relentless and refusing to quit, until you win.

The win is inevitable, if you keep moving forward on the journey.
