On Load Tap Changer Transformers

On load tap changer (OLTC) transformers are a type of transformer that allows for the adjustment of the voltage output while the transformer is in operation. This is in contrast to traditional transformers that require the power to be shut off before adjusting the voltage output.

The principal of operation for OLTC transformers is based on the use of a tap changer mechanism, which is a mechanical device that allows for the selection of different voltage taps on the transformer's winding. The tap changer is connected to a control system that monitors the voltage output and makes adjustments as needed.

The OLTC transformer has a series of taps on the primary winding, and each tap corresponds to a different voltage level. When the transformer is in operation, the control system will monitor the voltage output and make adjustments as needed. If the voltage output is too low, the control system will select a higher tap on the primary winding, which will increase the voltage output. If the voltage output is too high, the control system will select a lower tap on the primary winding, which will decrease the voltage output.

The OLTC transformer also has a bypass switch that allows the transformer to be bypassed when the tap changer is being adjusted. This ensures that there is no interruption in the power supply during the adjustment process.

Overall, the working of OLTC transformer is based on the principle of adjusting the voltage output while the transformer is in operation by using a tap changer mechanism and control system, thus providing a more efficient and reliable power supply.
