Trump got a majority of the white college educated vote. He got a majority of white women. He got a majority of the white vote in urban areas. Class and gender had little to do with this victory. It was largely a rebellion of whites in defense of their privileged status.

But there were a number of white Republicans who could have rallied that cause. What made Trump successful was the popular media’s desperate need to gather and retain an audience. Trump was simply a more entertaining celebrity than his opponents. He was great click bait and so he dominated the popular media from his entry into the race to the final weekend of the campaign.
