Mentoring is a fantastic tool to support with personal and professional goals.

I often find it is poorly used as many don’t understand its value or how to go about making the right choice for a mentoring relationship.

So, avoid adding another glorified coffee catch up to your schedule and create a meaningful mentoring relationship with these tips.

  • Know what you want from a mentor? Be clear on what it is you want help with.
  • Choose your mentor wisely, why and how can this person help you? Really focus on this. Don’t just pick someone because they seem nice and avoid your clone too.
  • Set a timeframe for your objective. Be clear on not just what you want to learn but the lifecycle of this relationship too.

Remember that mentoring is not just about an elder or someone more experienced guiding someone younger.

Reverse mentoring is becoming very popular and incredibly useful for all participants. We can learn so much from each other, not to mention the ability to share our variety of skills.

What you can do now

Reflect on these insights next time you’re seeking a mentor. They might just help you find the right person for you.
