International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Poverty can be considered as one’s financial inability to fulfill basic human needs. This is a global issue which affect to almost all the countries of the world. 1 out of every 10 people in the world lives below the international poverty line. So, it was declared through resolution 47/196 adopted on 22 December 1992, by the UN General Assembly that October 17 as the international day for eradication of poverty. The theme of 2021 poverty eradication day is “Ending Persistent Poverty, Respecting all People and our Planet “. This day represents an opportunity to acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty, a chance for them to make their concerns heard, and a moment to recognize that poor people are the first ones to fight against poverty.

Poverty is not merely the lack of income but also the foundation for many other social, ethical and political issues. They are hunger, malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discriminations and exclusions as well as lack of participation in political sector. The reasons for poverty are inadequate access to resources like clean water and all other resources, little or no access to livelihoods or jobs, conflicts, inequality, poor education, climate change, lack of infrastructure, limited capacity of the government.

All the countries should include national policies and actions in accordance with the internationally agreed development goals to eradicate poverty. Some poverty eradication programs are integrated Re-settlement areas, new houses, income generating projects, additional food, entrepreneur program, early childhood education, basic infrastructure and social facility and behavioral changes of society. And science and technology innovations play a crucial role in eradicating poverty like boosting agriculture productivity and generation of energy cheaply. The rich also can contribute for the course.

In a world characterized by an unprecedented level of economic development, technological means, financial resources, and still millions of persons are living in extreme poverty is a moral outrage. So, it is a must to erase poverty for the sake of all mankind.
