Ear infection home remedy for kids

Ear infection is something which is quite common amongst children, especially toddlers. But the good part is that majority of the earaches can be quite easily treated without seeking the help of an eardoc or even stepping out from your home. This is thanks to home remedies. You can be assured that home remedies will not affect your child’s hearing. So to make matters slightly easier for you, I have listed below some of the ear infection home remedy for kids.

Heat

One of the most preferred home remedy by eardoc is applying a hot pack to the ear. This is a very effective method of treating earaches. It can also help to bring down your fever if you have one. If you are not a big fan of hot packs for your child, you can apply an ice pack as well. The method would be just as effective.

Onions

Onions are also a preferred remedy by the majority. Some people simply cut an onion in half and place it over the affected ear. Others gently heat a small portion of the onion until it has become warm but not soft. After that, tuck the heated onion into the ear. Some people wrap the onion in a moist and warm cloth. Or you can even use it directly on the ear. Another option is to squeeze out some onion juice, heat gently, and put a few drops into the ear. The recommended compress time is ten to fifteen minutes, or until the onion cools.

Garlic oil

There are dozens of variations of garlic oil for treating earaches. This is because it combines eucalyptus and garlic for a double anti-bacterial, anti-viral punch. However, it should be stored in a tinted bottle in a cool and dark place. It should also be used up within two weeks. For very young children, heat and steam are the safest choices. Or you could even go with plain warm coconut oil or olive oil.

Mullein oil

Common mullein has been known to treat a variety of diseases. For ear aches, the buds and flower are infused in olive oil, then applied in the ear. To infuse the flowers in oil, gather enough blooms which would fill a small jar partially. Cover with olive oil and let sit for a week or two. Strain and place in a tinted bottle. For extra germ fighting powers, you can even add some cloves of chopped garlic.

Xylitol

Even though this is not considered to be a conventional pain reliever, it could avoid your child avoid the pain of an ear infection in the first place. This is because it would make their immune system stronger and keep them healthy at all times.

Herbal steam inhalations

Herbal steam inhalations help reduce nasal swelling caused by the dry and cold air of the winter and increase airflow to the Eustachian tubes. To prepare a herbal steam inhalation, all you have to do is simply heat up a pot of water and then pour it into a bowl or basin. Add a handful of fresh or dry herbs. Lean over the basin and inhale the steam. To get the most out of the treatment, use a large towel to create a tent over your head and trap the steam.
