I have a feeling that I misunderstand how 2SV and Security Keys work. Do these technologies truly replace the passwords or are they built on top of the existing password-based infrastructure?

It seems that 2SV and Security Keys make life easier by reducing the need to type passwords but they do not lead us to “a world without passwords” ?
