So, what do you do after university?
So you just finished university and you have absolutely no idea what to do? Perfect.
You are just about to enter what can be the most creative and productive period of your life.
Unfortunately, many of us are led to believe that life has a certain ‘pattern’. We go to school, we go to university, we get a job, somewhere along this line we figure out what we want to do and then we settle. We get the house, we get the car, we get security and the comfort and we become ‘happy’. Now don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of honor in this kind of life, but I don’t really think it’s for everyone.
Passion isn’t always so clear.
A lot of people talk about finding a passion. As if there is some point in your life when the world stops and your smacked across the face by this epiphany that goes by the name of ‘your calling’. For some people this may be true, but what if you’re still wondering around and you really have no idea what you want to set your heart in, what do you do then?
The art of trying shit out.
Don’t get caught up in the idea that you need to do one thing for the rest of your life. Keep playing with your options and never turn your back on the opportunity to be creative in a field that you know absolutely nothing about. Most importantly, forget about your weaknesses. Play on your strengths. Do the things that you want to do and do the things that you are good at. The biggest mistake you can make right now is to settle for something because you think it is the right way to do things. Play around with your options and explore new areas of your life. One defining characteristic of great people is that they are adaptable; they get this trait from simply having the defiance to change up the game whenever they feel like it.
Have fun, but stay focused.
I believe that focus is important but direction is overrated. You should focus on the kind of person that you want to become, but if your life is spreading out before you like a river delta then this is not a bad thing. Your gut needs to become your compass. If you feel like making drastic decisions and big changes then you need to do everything in your power to make these things happen. These changes are going to be scary, but right now, the scarier the better. A lot of people stop at this point and just go for what is safe. I’m not saying that this is the wrong way to do things; I just believe that there is another way and often that way is paved by risk.
I know this sounds conceited, but hard work fixes everything. Just keep yourself busy, if nothing else you will be building foundation. Lets say that you do discover a passion one day and you decide to dedicate your life to it. Chances are that you will uncover it through the work that you’re doing right now. Your repartition builds your reputation and being known as hard worker is never a bad thing.
Society puts a lot of pressure on people to become something when they young but the truth is that the greatest people in this world are there because they continue to create the life that they want to lead. Age has nothing to do with it. You have a lot of time to figure out what you want to do with your life. The best thing you can be doing right now is working hard to make shit happen. If it’s a passion project then that’s great. If not, at least make sure it’s something that you want to be doing. Patience is wildly underestimated and too many people are focused on what they can get right now and because of this they often put themselves into terrible situations. It’s far better to do something that makes you happy then run after that certain job because it has prestige and a few more numbers in its paycheck. In the long run you will win, but only if you spend every waking moment doing exactly what you want to be doing. Time is the greatest commodity, don’t waste it.
