Deleting an item is a dramatic and a destructive action, so make it respond appropriately. Don’t just make the item disappear with a binary action.

While I don’t disagree that motion can enhance the understanding of an interaction, you certainly shouldn’t depend on it. I design for some devices that are simply too old or not powerful enough to use even simple animations and part of responsiveness is to recognize when to “turn off” animations. From that point of view, yes, you can just make an item disappear with a binary action.
