Recently, I have been researching and compiling a detailed reports on companies that some of my clients are interviewing for. Sometimes finding an interesting conversational nugget from LinkIn and cross referencing that with Facebook has landed a client with the next round of interviews.
You are right about research. Once I compiled research data on a non profit I was interviewing for and was able to create a dialogue opposed an interview. Though I did not get that particular position, I am on their roster to perform research projects as needed.
