In his blog, Gates called Shoe Dog “an honest tale of what it takes to succeed in business.”

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth

Talent alone will not do it: The power of grit and perseverance is the real road to success, says Duckworth, a psychologist whose TED talk on the topic has been viewed millions of times. While her book focuses primarily on education, its tenets apply equally to business. Duckworth profiles people whose tenacity and passion led to success against the odds and offers a four-step program on how you can develop the character needed to accomplish your goals.

Disrupted: My Misadventure in the Startup Bubble by Dan Lyons offers a fun (yes, really) and entertaining look at involuntary career changes. Lyons, a 50-something tech reporter for Newsweek, found himself out of a job during media downsizing; he took a job with a startup, HubSpot, where the co-workers were younger and the company goals different. Lyons’ acerbic critique is a classic case of being “the old guy” who’s the odd man out, but he has points to make beyond the frat-party culture: Creating technology, and making a profit, are not important; getting bigger, faster, is.

An Optimist’s Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations, by Thomas L. Friedman, goes beyond the business world to explain how in spite of sometimes overwhelming change, mankind has a way of adapting. Technology, climate change, and other 21st century challenges are daunting, Friedman agrees, but we’re up to the job. The book, The New York Times said, is an easy-to-understand “master class in explaining” the details. Friedman, a Times columnist and three-time Pulitzer winner, even proposes a list of 18 steps the government can take to make things better.
