A column is such a vertical structure that is designed to transmit compressive load from the roof to the foundation. Types of Columns:-

Columns are upright architectural structures that support an arch and are divided into the upper and the lower portions. The upper part is known as the capital and the lower portion as the base. There are various types of columns which are enumerated below.

Doric Column:- These types of column have a fluted shaft and a plain capital and are the earliest form of the columns found in the ancient Greek architecture.

Ionic Column:-This is another form of the ancient Greek architecture. Its characteristic is the classy and meticulous carvings or volute on its ionic capital.

Corinthian Column:- This is the most ostentatiously carved, opulent columns of the Greek architecture. It has intricate carvings and is more complex compared to the Ionic and Doric styles.

Composite Column:- This is a fusion of the Corinthian and ionic styles and are an illustrious examples of the classical Roman architecture. It is a kind of a hybrid column that belongs to the Roman era and has been developed after the sophisticated Corinthian columns of the Greeks.

Tuscan Column:- This is another classical example of Roman architecture developed in Italy. Its shaft is impeccably crafted to a smooth finish and looks similar to the Greek Doric column. These type of columns are plain without carvings and is one of the five types of classical architecture that defines modern times Neoclassical building styles.
