The 5 Reasons I ❤️ Udemy

Udemy, an online platform where you can learn anything, is where I have watched more than 500 lectures this summer holidays only. And that number is still growing rapidly. I think you could almost call me an Udemy-addict, hahaha.. 😅

Is Udemy reinventing the education market, pricing and accessibility? I don’t know, but what I do know is that there are excellent courses for a good price taught by industry-experts who have a passion for teaching. In this post I’ll share you why I genuinely love Udemy.

1. High quality courses

Of course, the most important criteria for an online learning platform is to offer excellent courses. As literally anyone can become a teacher on Udemy it is very interesting to see what quality of courses is available. As can be expected course quality varies from one course to another. However, that is not a problem at all. Thanks to Udemy its completely transparent course rating system it is very easy to find courses taught by the best teachers from all over the world. Believe me, there are still plenty of high quality courses available.

From my student room in the Netherlands I learn from teachers from Australia, Portugal and even Sillicon Valley (San Fransisco).

2. Previews and reviews

As it comes to teaching methods I am very critical. That is why I really like I can preview some lecturers of the course before I even pay a single penny. Contrary to the current education system where I have simply no control over the teachers that are assigned to my courses, with Udemy I can determine who I take courses from. I think that is how it should be, after all students can have different learning styles and thus preferences for teaching methods.

Next to that, the transparent review system allows me to easily find out how “alumni” students (who enrolled in the course previously) rate it. Obviously, that is a far more reliable source to form my opinion upon than a teacher who tells me his course is “the only course you will ever need”. I wish this transparent review system existed at my university. In that case, I might have chosen other electives.. 😉

3. Video format

It’s a fact: every student learns at a different pace. For that reason, I think traditional lecturers aren’t that effective. While prerecorded video may not allow for interaction, it does allow students to take a course at their own pace where and whenever they want. You cannot only skip the irrelevant parts, but you can also speed up the videos (from 1.25 until 2.00). Although, I am not a native English speaker I can still watch most of the lecturers at 1.5 speed while understanding the course material. For a 41.5 hour course (Web Developer Bootcamp) that can really be a timesaver as you understand. That is what I call effective learning.

4. Pricing system

Fortunately, university education in The Netherlands is pretty cheap (2K / year) compared to many countries. However, that does not apply for coding bootcamps which can cost anywhere from hundreds to even thousands of euros. Udemy offers several coding bootcamps for only a fraction of the price, especially during one of the many discount periods.

Let’s do the math: taking into account the 40% discount for all Udemy courses “The Web Developer Bootcamp” currently costs €21,00 (about $23,37). The course contains 41.5 hours of video material which means €0,51 for each hour of content. That is a bargain, right?

5. Life long access

Contrary to some other teaching platforms, once you purchase an Udemy course you will have life long access. Especially, when you take follow-up courses (e.g. first an introduction course and then an advanced course) I find it very valuable to rewatch old lecturers.

Also, most teachers regularly update their courses to keep up to date with current software changes. Compare that to your paper school books!

5.0 / 5.0 Star Rating (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)?

You probably wonder: is Udemy perfect? No, it is not. But I think it is close to perfect. For example, I find the multiple choice questions limited in explaining why a certain answer is correct. Also, it would be great if you could take an exam that proves your mastery of the course material which you could add to your LinkedIn profile / resume.

That being said, I really like the Udemy platform. I have used the acquired knowledge to build my personal website and currently I take several data science courses that prepare me for a master in Data Science. Actually, by taking these data science courses I can save 6 months of additional education as I should otherwise take a premaster in Data Science.

Again, a time-saver for only a faction of the price of university education! Thanks to Udemy!

Cheers from the Netherlands,

P.S. Udemy is a great learning platform for students, however I should not forget to mention and thank the following instructors I have taken courses from: Kirill Eremenko, Colt Steele, Jonas Schmedtmann. After all, recall: excellent courses are crucial for an online learning platform.
