Day One: President Obama and the First Family have Landed in Havana, Cuba
The Obama White House

The revolution in Cuba in 1959 brought an end to the corrupt regime of Fulgencio Batista which was propped up by an unholy alliance of the U.S. government, U.S. based multinationals and the American Mafia. Hopefully, President Obama will accept that the U.S. bears much of the responsibility for the conditions that led to the current communist regime.

Let’s not forget that despite the subsequent embargo, (and Cuba’s less than stellar human rights record), the country is an exemplar in many areas such as education and child mortailty. Cuba trains foreign students and supplies vital doctors to many parts of the world while spending 10% of its budget on education compared to 2% by the U.S.

The U.S. can learn a lot from Cuba. Let’s hope the anticipated rapprochement doesn’t return this beautiful island back to the ways of the past.
