I would imagine that the Canadian First Nations and Appalachian health indicators would be pretty dismal but CFN would be worse. Canada practised cultural genocide on our CFN people until quite recently and continues to underfund reserves. One consequence of this and an additional longevity factor for our horribly treated native population is suicide which has taken on alarming proportions, especially among the young. That’s an indictment of the lack of meaningful programs and mental health care on reserves. The federal government handles health for our first nations reserve populations (rather than the provinces which administer their own). I don’t know if an insurance based health care system could change anything about that.
Our new PM, Trudeau has promised to change the way FN people are treated but the hands of government move slowly.
