Abby — I was just talking to a fellow writer friend of mine about just this thing. He and I both are on anti-depressants, different ones, but nevertheless, we both have, at times, muddled through a life that is devoid of highs and lows. We’ve sat in a kind of emotional trough where we’re sheltered and okay — but never great. I am a strength coach/personal trainer, and my writer friend is one of my clients. I tell him the same thing I tell all my clients who suffer from depression — half, maybe more, of my mood and energy is maintained with exercise. I work-out four times a week. As a result I find myself more cheerful in the morning. I sing in the car again. I more deeply enjoy the people I love. Some may say they don’t have time for exercise, but I reply, “Then be prepared to waste hours paying an emotional price.” Good luck to you and I hope you find some solace in the beauty of strength and movement.
