Tl; dr: yes because it tastes expensive
Recently, I noticed that a dog food that I thought was poultry-free actually contained chicken byproduct. I ran to Chewy.com to find a new food and noticed that Wild-Caught has become the elite dog food brand marketing term du jour.
Somehow I just can’t picture a dog skipping past a farm stocked full of fat salmon to try to hunt wild ones from a nearby stream instead, so I decided to ask my little hunters themselves. Interview has been condensed for space.
Do you prefer wild-caught salmon to farmed?
“Absolutely,” said the corgi. “Wild caught just tastes better. All those whole grains.”
“Fish don’t eat grains,” sniffed the chihuahua. “Unless they’re farmed. And I’m allergic to gluten so I would know.”
“You’re sensitive, not allergic,” interjected the Jack Russell mix. “I’m the one that’s allergic to gluten. But I can eat fish.”
Even farm raised fish that were fed gluten?
“That I don’t know,” the Jack Russell conceded. “I do like fish, though.”
“Who doesn’t like fish?” mused the corgi.
So you all agree that you prefer wild-caught salmon?
“Of course! Like I said earlier, who doesn’t like fish?” — Corgi
“Sure, why not?” — Jack Russell mix
“Are we talking fresh or frozen?” inquired the chihuahua. “I generally don’t do frozen unless it’s flash frozen sushi. And no seafood east of the 405 unless we’re in like New York or Maryland or something.”
I point out that I was referring to dry food, and also that the chihuahua has never been to Maryland.
“Oh. Ew. Maybe.” answered the chihuahua. “I only eat dry food on odd days, if it’s cloudy, or if we’re out of treats. I could consider it, I suppose.”
