Statement of Purpose for Master in Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation

LUND UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT

Ravi Paliwal

Application number: 9670788

Bachelor in Engineering 4 years of course from India

Q1. What are your reasons for applying to this programme? Relate to previous experience and personal qualifications and how you see this programme furthering your development in these respects.

To shape any idea into a product, one needs proper consultancy, guidance, and mentorship that takes it in right direction. My purpose of seeking this course is to assure the right blend of discussion from like-minded people, mentorship from serial entrepreneurs and mentors, and old-school textbook advice.

I get fair number of ideas that can benefit industries relating to IT. My current work profile allows me to experiment on many of these ideas. Some of them go to next stages (a couple of them are in beta phase, a couple of them are bread-earning), some are dropped after discussions and many of them exist already as wonderful products around the globe.

In these 5 years, I have worked on many experimental products in various domains. In past two years — as I have come to this realisation now — I easily observe problems that can be solved by building products based on AI and IoT. Ironically, I have failed the most in these sectors.

Sweden, true to its global image, is the best environment that catalyses ideas that have AI or IoT backbone. And Lund University, Sweden, seems to be the best platform where many of my ideas can flourish. To add to it, I’d be able to explore new horizons which I have not been able to during these 5 years in India.

Q2. Describe your previous experience of entrepreneurial activities in a broad sense, also including activities besides start-ups.

My inclination towards business and entrepreneurship started from my early childhood. This was the period when I started installing makeshift-shops in fairs and it kept budding throughout my college and in my corporate life. Below is a brief of things that I’ve tried my hands on:

Fire cracker manufacturing and selling. Aged: 14. There is an interesting story behind it.

Teaching.

Inter-college newspaper and magazine publication.

It might sound a little less entrepreneuristic — but I have worked in almost every department of an IT product development cycle. From support to sales to business development. And from quality analyst to software designing and development.

Currently my two projects are in beta phase. One is DBHQ.io which deals in making productive use of owned marketing database, and another one is a communication tool: dontsms.me that stops micro level spamming from SMS marketing.

Apart from it, I help a Swastika partners funded company as a consultant on client & vendor acquisition, marketing, client support, and operations part.

Q3. Based on your previous experience, elaborate on the pros and cons of working in teams versus individually.

Team V/s individual. At what level? At co-founder level? Or You, yourself alone and 100s of employees? Both are team but with different relations. Intensity of ownership is different in both cases. If business has a process to follow, we need people with intensity, but when there is no process, we need people who can take ownership.

A team works when an appointed leader inspires the co-workers to follow the common vision. The chances of growth in a team substantially increases as many tasks can be completed in limited time.

Teamwork:

Pros:

  1. Increased innovations
  2. Mutual discussion in team always improves products UX (User experience)
  3. More efficient, thoughtful, and effective, as well as faster, higher quality outcomes
  4. More thoughtful ideas.

Cons:

  1. Synchronization in a team becomes a tedious task.
  2. Different people, different mindset.
  3. Group meeting, pro grade meetings, weekly meetings, the monthly meeting may lead to time wastage.
  4. The whole team is only as strong as the weakest member.
  5. More dependencies, more delay.

Individual

Pros:

  1. No dependencies
  2. Faster decisions.
  3. No meetings and no group discussion.
  4. You know all things to be done. No need of synchronization.

Cons:

  1. Managing everything on your own is not possible
  2. It may take a long time to accomplish something without help and support.
  3. No one will be there to motivate, you have to do all the things by yourself, which might lead to stress.
  4. You have only your own angle to solve the problems. You can’t discuss, and for thinking out of box, you need others help.

Q4. What are your career ambitions immediately after graduating from this programme? How do you see your career developing over the next few years?

I’ve vision in IoT and Thought Leadership:

Instead of building own idea immediately I would like to work with someone whose organisation’s goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by the need to generate financial return.

My overall technical objective is to be able to make fruitful contribution in the field of M2M communication, by seamlessly integrating various machines in easiest of way. Essentially, a platform that enables machine communication so simple as sending email.

I am quite inspired by Steve jobs and Elon Musk. If I ever get the chance to work with people like them, I would love to. It is not something I only want to start on my own, I want to give some impact on this world by my ideas, execution and work. I really want to take this world in better direction and whatever it takes in achieving my goal, I will do.

I have lots of ideas, definitely, I want them to be executed. But, with a team that can make the execution so better that these ideas blend in people’s life with utmost ease. I would learn and work with other organizations and will implement what I’ve learned in the university, until I have an idea that can change (for better) the way people lead their life.

In the long run, I see myself a leader, an entrepreneur having multiple successful startups taking human race one step ahead.

Q5. If you would like to join the track Entrepreneurship New Venture Creation:

Would you want to develop your own idea or an external idea the master´s year? If you have an idea of your own that you would like to develop, describe your idea in short.

I am going to join Corporate Entrepreneurship, but I have few ideas which I think can be successful.

  1. API middleware

Problem

There is no easy way to connect APIs or integrate them in the software. IoT, mobile apps, software developers, all face issues when it comes to third party integration or server side coding in case of IoT.

Solution

One URL which can receive any data, observe or modify it and finally take any action in any software by adding APIs from marketplace.

2. A platform to convert a website into multiple languages

Problem

How can a business reach multiple regional audience with their local language?

For example, Netflix wants to reach more audience in multiple regions. So, the very first step is their content should be in a local language.

  1. There is no single platform available for creative writers to contribute for website content.
  2. There are many websites which needs to be localized.

Solution

Content writers from different countries will come at common platform where they will serve businesses.

I perceive this program to be a solid step towards my future career as Entrepreneur profession, because I strongly believe that this course can provide me knowledge that will help me to do that better.

I’ve vision in IoT and Thought Leadership:

Instead of building own idea immediately I would like to work with someone whose organisation’s goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by the need to generate financial return.

Education: I don’t have an honors degree but i’ve worked hard and gain a lot of experience in IT industry. It might sound a little less entrepreneuristic — but I have worked in almost every department of an IT product development cycle. From support to sales to business development. And from quality analyst to software designing and development.

Experience:

In last 5 years, I have worked on many experimental products in various domains. In past two years — as I have come to this realisation now — I easily observe problems that can be solved by building products based on AI and IoT. Ironically, I have failed the most in these sectors.

I especially like that program Lund University implements has an international perspective, and I firmly believe it will prepare me for work in dynamic global industry, especially for emerging IT companies which are now main generator of economic growth. Moreover I appreciate the emphasis of the program on practice-based learning, and possibility to transfer knowledge in the work practices.

My overall technical objective is to be able to make fruitful contribution in the field of M2M communication, by seamlessly integrating various machines in easiest of way. Essentially, a platform that enables machine communication so simple as sending email.
