An ad in a mag was the design inspiration for our home…

Once upon a time, a once upon an architect sought for what most architects dream of a house “they” designed. That was me. I work now in the business side of IT and am returning to my educational roots for building up our home in Bethesda, Maryland. My husband and I bid on this place 2 years ago after several contractors gave us a definite nod that the additions we wanted to make would be possible and within our total budget. 2 years later, with ideas we were ready to make the leap!

A home actually comes down to the people who live in it. This home is where our kids grow into adults, where we grow old, where we flourish with the blessings of our parents and ancestors, where our kith and kin feel they receive warmth and care, where all who come through feel safe. Let me put it this way… it is One Big Giant Hug!

It needs exterior walls, floor, ceilings, windows and very few doors. This place is expected to be a repository of memories, more specifically happy memories. Thinking of this I wanted to be inspired by a symbol of marriage and togetherness.

We live in the US, where a diamond ring is a seal of love. The diamond ring, like real estate is also an irrational purchase. Why the same ring costs different, how can one tell the difference, does the bigger diamond mean more commitment, if it is by a designer does that make the bond unique. Whenever anyone has shown me their ring just like when someone shows their wedding/children’s pictures one always exclaims… wow! Without thinking too much, if it is really wow. The ring is not judged by others as it is possibly expected to. The key is, the wearer is happy.

I found this lovely ring advertised in the architectural magazine Dwell. It screamed contemporary, cool, unique and expensive. The company is called Konzuk, they do not have a brick store but have an online presence at konzuk.com. So I went to the site and found beautiful rings in platinum but also in stainless steel.

The perfect seal of love I thought is contemporary, cool, unique and deceivingly affordable. This was the starting point for the design of our home.
