Project Taj Mahal

It takes a certain personality and it takes a certain couple dynamic. To give up one’s weekends looking at door knobs and tiles. Have sleepless nights over the color of paint. To pray to the contractor gods that they turn up on time and actually make some progress. Ask yourself this question “What is my pain threshold?” If you say “high”… go retrofit.

I call this project Taj Mahal. An interview happens with all the key players of this home. What do you like? How do you want to live? What is missing in your life that you would like to add? What can drain your energy and how can we re-energize?

Here is what surfaced… Where do you keep lunch boxes? How can laundry folding be made fun? How do we handle Bethesda’s power cuts? Where can we play basket ball? Where can we practice music? What kind of music? How can I display my collection of teapots, my mobiles, my moon cake moulds, my Moroccan tiles? Oh wait, I am not the only one who collects junk. How can other family members display their treasures? How important is green tea in your life? Are you a bathtub or a shower person? Left handed or right handed family members? Can I have a pumice stone inbuilt in the shower for a mini pedicure? For a designer these are problems that need a solution.

The Taj Mahal was just a tomb in the middle of a garden on the riverbank.
