Lathing in general is shaping a material into a round shape, by placing the material on a rotating, spinning wheel and using a chisel to skim off the material as it spins. having a material being turned is soothing and simple to shape into a round form. Wood and clay are used a lot in the lathing process but other solid materials are acceptable such as metals and plastic that goes through dynamic-lathe process.
