Your argument falls down in two important ways. First, there is no logical reason that marginalized minority groups should get special protection from hate speech. If I advocate for an end to male genital mutilation, Jews can call me a Nazi and displatformize me. If I advocate for erotic films, Feminists can call me a misogynist. Which one of us is using “hate speech.” To me misogynist is a hateful thing and I feel threatened by crowds chanting that at me. I believe that the “black lives matter” crowd is wrongly defaming the police. To me they practice hate speech against whites. Do they get a platform to speak and I do not? What you advocate, seems to me, is a system where you identify all the minorities that agree with your definition of hate speech, band them together under a liberal umbrella, denounce any person who disagrees with you, and pushes for denying political opponents from having a platform. No?
If I advocate for curtailing illegal immigration, am I a racist? If I advocate for denying immigration to people who practice sharia law, am I a religious intolerant? At what point does denying a platform become an advancement of a political agenda? An article here on this platform (Medium) linked to a video where women were advocating for Female Genital Mutilation. Should this be permitted? Even if the article was against the practice, should we hear from its supporters who just flout their ignorance?
My second concern is one of prior restraint. How do you tell if someone is a Nazi until you hear their words. If I write for Brietbart, am I a white supremacist? National Review?WSJ? Where is the line between the right and alt-right? Does a speech committee pass judgement on what I am about to say? How far back in my past do you go to search for racism or homophobia. Both Clintons and Obama supported DOMA, should they have a platform? In my opinion no. DOMA was always very thinly veiled homophobia and hateful. They should never get a platform to speak based on their history of intolerance.
I trust that we will all call out evil when we see or hear it. To do that we have to suffer the indignity of letting the evil ones speak, and then heap on the ridicule.
