This week we learned about oppression and privilege. The first article we read named “Oppression” shows how this is still prevalent to our society. She uses metaphors like “the bird cage”. She states that when you are up close to a bird cage you might not see why the bird feels like its trapped, but once you take a look back it is clear to see the bars around trapped the bird. Once you take a step back to view the entire picture you will see a different outlook on the situation.

Another article we read this week named “Age, Race, Class and Sex: Women Redefining Difference” explains how the majority population is what our society favors. Being a certain race, religion, and status all matters in our American society. People who do not fit what is seen to America as perfect will not be treated with the same value. This includes gender also. Women as often seen as less than men regardless of race. Minorities in our society are often overlooked.

Lastly, we read an article titled “White Privilege”. The author explains how she had never took prospective in the word privilege before until she realized the differences between men and women. Men were seen as greater value towards society. She also states that men never want to own up to it or even see it from a women’s prospective. Shortly, she then realized that when you do have privileged, you are taught not to recognize it. This made race some into play. She states that everyone is privileged somehow and she was privileged for the color of her skin.

Overall, I have thought into greater detail about the material. The first article opened my eyes up to oppression what small steps society might need to take so that we see everyone’s point of views. The second article opened my eyes to “cultural norms” and how they affect people who do not fit them. The last article showed me that in every group there is a standard to be met and whoever fits those receives privilege. Oppression, privilege, and society’s norms all put pressure on the people who do not fit the “perfect” deceptions. These issues are all globally affecting the human race. From these articles, I’ve learned that there is still a lot more work to be done but if people recognize and talk about what is happening, there is a possibility for change.
