Agreed. It was designed / intended to give the smaller states a slightly louder voice in elections. Remember, we didn’t start out as one single country, but as thirteen small ones…. In effect, the EC forces a candidate to get not just a deep base of support, but a broad one. You can win Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, but without some votes from places like Altoona and Williamsport, you’re not going to take Pennsylvania. Likewise, you can get all the Zanesvilles and Youngstowns you want, but you still need some of Cleveland and Cincinnati to win Ohio.

One should note that the current “swing states” are middle-sized, and have a mix of both urban and rural communities.

All of these alternatives to the EC simply change which states become the swing ones. Even keeping things the way they are can change the swing states. In 2000, it was Florida. In 2004, Ohio….
