Critiquing social media is old news. I’ve read most (if not all) arguments out there — from analogies to addictive slot machines, to negative mental health cycles, to reducing our attention span, to just being an utter waste of time. As a UX designer, I’ve had front-row seats to the unfolding of dark patterns, persuasive design, and designing for an attention-starved society. To be honest, as compelling as most arguments are, it has little impact on most folks. I hear friends share frustrations about social media but they don’t miss a beat with their #instastories. …
