I agree with this thinking but “liberals” need to do more than offer helpful policies, they have to convey a compelling and believable vision. Voters are not interested in policies, hence the voting “against their interests” that is so common. Voters have values and they resonate with leaders that connect to those values.
Many so-called moderate voters have different values, some traditionally conservative, some traditionally liberal. Progressive leaders need to evoke teamwork, collaboration, investment in the future, compassion, love of nature etc. and they will activate these values in the minds of voters, who then will start to see leaders on those issues as representing them.
The mental frames are (unfortunately) more important than the platform. If they can’t get some voters to start caring about the future, liberals will have less and less power to enact any kind of policies.
