Focus on content
Display content that is valuable to the user
Hide superfluous or irrelevant data

Tell a story
Stories turn data into useful, actionable information
Lead the reader, step by step, through the data
Clearly convey the single key insight the user should take away from the visualization
Use visual hierarchy to guide the user

Keep it simple
Avoid using a lot of colors
Use legible fonts
