Mobile Messaging

Mobile phone is considered as the center of a convergence media practices. As a daily life coordinated device, mobile phone not only plays a role of functionally receiving the calls and messages, but also plays a role of connecting to people, creating contents and accessing other forms of information. According the reading by Larissa Hjorth, the author addressed that mobile is perceived as “a fashion item, a status maker, a material manifestation of identity and a constant companion”(Page 45), the representation of a mobile device indicates its functions in the perspective of different aspects. According a research done by Nielson, 50% to 75% of young people from age of 15 to 24 in nine countries including UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Russia, India, China and US owns responsible for their own mobile device. Youth culture is involved within the mobile phone culture, especially in the aspect of mobile messaging. The mobile messaging allows young people to connect with their social networks and express the personalities and emotions based on their identities.

The culture of using mobile phone, especially the culture of messaging among young people in Japan has lead to a culture called “Keitai”, which is a representation of cute culture in Japan. The Keitai mails and messages are representations of being cute and expressing fashionable characteristics by using Keitai language and Kana kanji conversations (Page35). Japanese young people considered the Keitai messaging as a tool to contacting peers. Using Keitai communication in messages is a trend for young people. The Keitai characters are symbolic tools for young people to vividly expressing their emotions. The mobile messaging in this case not only plays a functional role, but also a tool to allow young people creating their own trends and culture, to express their personalities within in a new form of communication system. This form of communication among youth people presents a personal script that people using mobile messaging to the mobile texting is a representation of personalities and expressions.

Another characteristic about mobile texting is that young people found the messaging allows greater freedom in expressions. And the messaging contents are influenced by their gender identities. According to a case study in the book “Youth, Society and Mobile Media in Asia”, the author has pointed that, due to a social “fact” that the young migrations “don’t know how to talk”. The young migrants from rural area to urban area, they found the text messages allow greater freedom. The asynchronous feature of the text can express their ideas in a confortable way. This case also draws attention to pre written messages and erotic messages. The prewritten messages are usually considered erotic like a pome or novel writing. According to the interviews from several young female in this case study. They believed it is a gender identity based issue that females are more willing sending erotic messages to express their feelings and emotions. In this case, the mobile texting in young people provides a way to comfortably express their emotions with greater freedom by using texts and pre written messages in their peer communication system. According to another case in book mentioned by author, the “transyouth”, which means the young people who is in between the youth age and the adulthood, considered the mobile device is a “convergence of the space and technology”(Page90), especially the mobile texting and mobile communication contributes to build their urban networks. Mobile messaging is a trend for young people to connecting and social networking with peers, even strangers.

The film World presents a space that is very connected. The background environment set up is a world theme park, and those young characters works and lives in this environment. The mobile messaging in the film presents the way of self-expression and the character’s connection among people and spaces. Every time when a message is coming, there will be a flash animation clip to present the message contents. These scenes refers to one of the characteristics of mobile messaging in youth culture is that the mobile messages can express the emotions in a more straight and vivid way. There is greater freedom in what to say, and what to present when using by texting. Based on the characters set up in this film, characters are young migrants from rural area. This situation also presents that mobile messaging as the connection of character’s working and living environment to urban city life. The pre-written message used in this film is to express the emotions of a girl who has an affair with main male character. In the film Infernal Affairs, mobile messaging plays a different role. The using of mobile phone, including mobile tracking technology, in this film presents a method of how people identify themselves when mobile is the only connection to their identifications and positions. The mobile texting is considered as a functional use for deliver important messages. The characters use mobile to make connections to their boss and officer. Therefore, the mobile phone he uses to deliver messages becomes the only tool to identify his position and status.

In conclusion, Young people as one of the significant responsible mobile device users, they have built the unique ways of using mobile messaging. The mobile messaging among young people dose not only work as a functional information receiver, but also the way to present personalities, identities, culture contexts, expressions, emotions and build relationships and networks with a greater freedom by texts in a comfortable way.
