Shifts From Privatization to Publication in Mobile Imaging and Mobile Listening
The technological development of mobile devices contributes to a more handful device, allows users to have personal attachment to the mobility of devices. The personalization of mobile devices creates a personal portable platform for individuals to receiving the media contents, including music, images, and text messages. The contacts list and messages on a mobile phone are considered as personal information.
For example, music lists stored in a Walkman and an IPod represents the personal taste of a music styles. By listening to personal music using ear buds and headphones, the user can access to an environment that only the user can access to. For example, in screening of the short clip from film “La Boum” during the class, a couple of young people are at a very crowded and load party, then the boy gives the girl a headphone, so that the girl has a personal access to the peaceful and beautiful country music that creates a completely different world from the outside environment. In this case, the mobile listening is very privatized, and it creates a personal experience in listening to music.
On the other hand, as the technology development, the mobile devices like mobile listening tools and imaging tools perceived to become convergent media devices. The users started to consume different kinds of media contents, and it comes to a trend of creating and sharing the contents.
The mobile imaging devices are very portable and easy using. According to the article by Daniel Palmer, he stated that the “snapshot photography has shifted away from a print-oriented mode to a transmission-oriented, screen-based mode”(Page 85), it means that the consuming of imagery information is based on screen mode. This situation contributes to the phenomenon of digital activism and citizen photojournalism. The personal consuming mobile imaging tools have shifted from personal to public. The users are very welling to share their imagery information based on this trend. People participated in public issues by snapshotting what they see. For instance, the protest “Arabic Spring”, people are snapshotting each aspects of this protest based on the facts they see and published on social media websites. In this case, the sharing of mobile images can be considered as a representation of an online-based participation culture for users. The images uploaded by users’ personal image devices build a large data collection in online public space. This case shows the publication side of mobile imaging.
Another example related to the shifting from privatization to publication about mobile imaging is the social culture of sharing in the development of web blogging, live streaming and cam girl culture. Mobile images recorded, manipulated and shared are the representation of daily realities in this case. For instance, the cam girl culture is based on live streaming and web blogging. The host records everyday reality and shares to audiences by live streaming. The cam girl culture usually associates with web blogging, which contributes in building online community. In this case, the host shares her image of personal lifestyle to the public and gain online community. The sharing of personalization shifts mobile imaging to a trend of being publicized.
Similar as mobile listening, the function and trend of sharing have become a main factor that shifts mobile listening from a privatized experience to a publicized experience. Due to the development of digital music industry and changes in mobile device based consuming habits, the expansion in downloading and sharing culture influences the privatization in mobile listening. The digital format of music and the mobile device based listening platforms accurate the expansion of downloading and sharing. Users are able to share their personal taste music lists by simply click the share button to their social networks. The digital format of music is very portable, that contributes to the easy accesses of music listening experiences. The sharing function in these days creates the method of establishing publicized experiences in mobile listening.
In conclusion, the technological development in building a mobile device not only contributes in building its mobility to increase the personal access of the device, but also adding the new format of media contents, like digital format of images and music, lead to a trend of sharing. The users consuming habits and the trend of sharing shift the mobile imaging and listening experiences to a publicized side. The public participation of media contents consumers facilitates the shift.
