What Would (Person) Do?

When making decisions, ask yourself, What would (person) do?

The person would be someone that you’re trying to model or that you think would make the right decisions in the same situation.

It can be a different person for each domain. You can pick and choose what you admire about this person.

When I think about investment related decisions, that person is Warren Buffett. For personal development, Jim Rohn. For relationships, Esther Perel. For Stoicism, Marcus Aurelius. For time management, Ed Thorp.

This list of mine is influenced by how much their work I’ve “internalized”. I’ve read and re-read books they’ve written. Watched their videos. Written notes. The more you know about the person, the better and more useful this question will be for you. Read their works with the intention of understanding how they think. The logic they use. Why they come to their conclusions.

By asking yourself, What would (person) do, you become more like the person you want to model, give yourself some space to avoid making impulsive decisions and you gain a degree of detachment and assess the situation more objectively.
