Where Can I Get In The Zone?

As someone that’s traveled non-stop for a number of years while working nomadically across the world, from London to Sao Paulo, Tblisi to New York, Riga to Bali, staying in the zone consistently was quite challenging.

One key realization I had is that my environment plays an outsize role in influencing my productivity. I can do functional work from home but I struggle to get into the “flow” at home.

So most of my meaningful work and deep thinking tends to happen in cafes and co-working spaces (thankfully, most of the cities I visit these days tend to have co-working spaces). For many of my friends, the exact opposite is true.

As a result of my experiences, I started to note the kind of spaces that worked for me and the ones that don’t, which I’ll share with you here. The environment of course is not the only factor for getting into flow but it’s what I’ll focus on here and share the rest in another article.

Nice to have:

  • Big pane windows, ideally with an inspiring view (cityscape, seaside, paddy field)
  • Cozy interior decor, ideally large wooden tables, plants and bookshelves filled with books
  • Buzzing with energy and people
  • Great coffee, ideally pourovers
