Where’s My Tribe?

Jim Rohn once said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.

Don’t underestimate the powerful influence the people you hang out with can have on you. If you’re surrounded by criminals, there’s a higher chance that you’ll become a criminal too if you’re not one already. If you’re surrounded by people that only see the worst in people, your views on people will probably change.

This goes the other way around too. If you’re a heavy drinker, there’s a good chance your social circle drinks heavily too. If you’re a smoker, there’s a good chance your friends and family smoke as well.

Spend some time to reflect on whether the people you’re with are the ones you want in your tribe.

Do they share your aspirations? Do they share your values? Do they share your habits? Are they the kind of people you want to spend most of your time hanging out with?

Maybe you’re surrounded by exactly the people you want in your life. Maybe there’s an opportunity to add different people into your life.

You can also link your tribe to what you’re currently looking to achieve. For instance, if you’re getting into marathons, you can join your local marathon club that meets weekly. If you’re looking to start an eCommerce business, you can join an eCommerce mastermind. The preference is for in-person meet ups over virtual ones.

In the case of achievement-based tribes, it’s better if you’re not the smartest one in the group as your learning opportunities will be limited.

Find your tribe. Ask yourself, Where’s My Tribe?
