Why don’t I have enough energy for this?

The key to being productive is effectively managing both your physical and emotional energy.

How you feel mentally and physically determines how you show up for any activity in life. Whether it’s writing, sports, hanging out with friends, starting or running a business — they all require energy.

Everyone pays attention to physical energy. Emotional energy often gets looked over despite the that fact that it’s just as important. You need to feel motivated to get shit done.

When you stay awake all night, you feel the effects immediately the next day. The cause effect relationship as well as the fix is clear. Get more sleep. When your thoughts are the culprit on the hand, the cause and solution becomes muddied. It’s not as obvious to detect. Unless it’s something very pressing, we won’t do anything about it. It just means that we’ll procrastinate or be absent minded. Where we take notice is when it comes debilitating.

Let me illustrate. Imagine that the love of your life just broke up with you. You hole up in your apartment in darkness, moping around for weeks with junk food laying around on the floor. Though you’re physically fine, you feel like you have no energy to work, socialize, or even just to get out of the apartment.
