We Were Never a Thing

We were never a thing

You called that day, I responded in kind

You smiled that time, I noticed, and again

You opened up, kept opening up

That story, only I know, the other story

~

We were never a thing

You just stopped by

My house

Work

To help do the laundry

To talk

To sit

To be

~

We were never a thing

You asked me to meet your mom, dad, again

You introduced me to your friends

We starting having friends, our friends

We had an Us, and I allowed myself to enjoy it

~

We were never a thing

You started not looking into my eyes

No more random hugs, whispers, touches

Your texts took longer to answer but said less or nothing

I stopped finding you just noticing, smiling, caring

~

We were never a thing

You said you thought you would be late, and again

You seemed farther away, you were

You stopped texting at midnight, lunch, afternoons, any time

~

We were never a thing

I realized I felt alone, lonely, not having you

I wanted the us

I needed the we

I wanted to feel

I missed being needed

~

We were never a thing

We were never a thing

We were never a thing!

~

We were something though

We were

I wish, so much

I wish desperately, I would have never allowed

Us to be anything

I wish we weren’t

I wish we were

Never a thing
