Anchor Text

What is an Anchor text?

Anchor text is the clickable text in a hyperlink or written paragraph leading you to separate site. The most common anchor text is the blue underlined as it is the web standard.

Google uses Anchor text to understand the context of a link and many people believe Google also uses anchor text to influence rankings, so as you can immediately see Anchor texts are very important.

Anchor texts need to be relevant. A reader or viewer needs to have an partial idea of the type of link they are accessing before they access it.This way the reader does not waste their time and they are able to benefit from the link they have clicked on, leaving them happy rather than annoyed!

Types of Anchor texts:

  • Exact match: the exact phrase or keyword google will use to rank.
  • Phrase match: the anchor text will contain the keyword or phrase google will rank.
  • Partial match: the anchor texts has all words needed to rank but not in exact order.
  • Branded: the Anchor text is the name of the brand.
  • Naked URL: the anchor text is exactly how it would appear in the browser.
  • Random: it is random and not including any target keywords.
  • Image links: the anchor texts is the alt text if the image.

Anchor texts are not something to rush or overlook as relevancy in anchor texts is the most important thing.
