Hours spent in the office has nothing to do with amount and quality of work. So the simple answer is no.

However a lot of the good healthy kind of bonding occurs late and on working weekends as a team, so some of this is necessary investment in time. But should never be enough of an issue that we need to question it. That you feel bad about leaving immediately at 5pm.

Extra hours? Sure, this especially in the initial years when developing a career; and of course later when running large organizations — you’re expected to. In between (30 yrs) you need to leave at 3, 5pm whatever — kids need to be picked up from school, dinner, laundry…. Nope, definitely not hanging around the office.
