Muslims don’t care whether you’re religious. They kill atheists too.

Okay, I’m not sure where you’re getting your information, but those numbers aren’t right and they’re misrepresenting reality.

It’s all a whole lot more nuanced.

1: Muslims have many different interpretations of Sharia Law

If you ask Muslims if they support Sharia law, most will say yes. But it’s like asking a Christian whether they believe in the Bible’s teachings. They’re not gonna say no.

Much like Christians though, Muslims pick and choose what they want to believe in.

So when they say they support Sharia Law, chances are they don’t mean they think you should have your hand cut off for stealing, or be killed for changing faith, or be killed or enslaved for having another faith.

In most countries, the majority, while saying they support Sharia law, is against these more extreme laws. Some countries — such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and Egypt, to name a few — do have more support for some of these barbarian laws though.

2: Most Muslims actually think it shouldn’t apply to non-Muslims

Polls show that the overwhelming majority of Muslims don’t believe it should be applied to non-Muslims.

And note that these polls weren’t taken in Western countries, but in countries that have a more dominant Muslim population.

In only 5 of 21 countries did more than half think the laws should apply to non-muslim citizens.

Related to this is that the vast majority of Muslims think it’s a good thing that peple from other religions are free to practice their faith. So the probably aren’t eagrer to kill any infidels.

Speaking of which…

3: The vast majority abhor extremist actions

Surveys show that basically everyone has an “unfavorable opinion” on ISIS. Muslims around the world strongly reject violence in the name of Islam.

In all countries polled, the vast majority of Muslims declare that they reject suicide bombings or other forums of violence against citizens. Only small minorities in some countries say it’s at least sometimes justified.

So it’s not exactly as black and white as you make it out to be. Heck, the polls I mention haven’t even taken Muslims living in the Western world into account.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of any religion. Frankly, I think they’re all quite silly. I also accept that religions aren’t going anywhere anytime soon though. I agree that I’d rather live here than in thier society. I’m not disputing that.

But again, it’s more nuanced than: “Every Muslim wants to kill and enslave us all!!!!”

That’s quite far from the truth. It’s misrepresenting the facts.

Nothing is black and white.

As for your second point: I didn’t say they killed themselves for publicity. And we weren’t even talking about the ones in the Midle East. That’s missing the point. It’s more about the people who live in the west.

It’s just like one school shooting inspiring another school shooting. Some lunatic might be inspired by another’s ISIS-inspired carnage. That’s what the author was getting at. I doubt the Muslims in the Middle East are doing it for fame and glory. The ones in the west, I think they’d like the idea of being seen as a hero in the eyes of their “brothers.”

In the end though, you have to understand that their action come more from a general sense of anger, fear, feeling lost and/or entitled. This is why people join extremists groups, be they ISIS, neo-nazies, IRA or anything else.
