Surrogacy: exploitation of poor women?

This is true that surrogacy has emerged out to be a very helpful technique through which childless couples can experience parenthood but various researches suggest that surrogacy has also lead to the exploitation of the women belonging to the underprivileged section of the society.

Surrogacy is a process in which a woman literally lends her womb to a childless couple in exchange of a certain amount of money. In simpler words it can be said that surrogate mother gives birth to a child that belongs to the couple that has hired her. In general surrogate mothers charge a lot of money from the couple and the amount can be in lakhs. However in India due to the widespread problem of poverty surrogate mothers are available at very low cost. This the reason why a lot of people from different parts of the world are making their way to India where they can hire a surrogate mother for a much lesser cost. Moreover, in India poor women have absolutely no knowledge about the laws and orders therefore it becomes easier to manipulate them.

In the past few years a lot of cases have been reported in many parts of the country that reveals the fact that surrogate mothers have been mistreated by people. A lot of social activists have stood up to eradicate this injustice that’s being done with poor Indian women but it hasn’t shown any improvement. Well, the saddest part of this whole situation is that these poor women are willfully being exploited because they feel that all the little money that they get proves to be of immense help for their families.

Experts from RVM Foundation say that there is an urgent need to raise awareness about this issue or else the situation would get even more distorted.
