Title: A very insightful look

Review: I had always wanted to know more about the settling of Australia by convicts, which was my reason for purchasing this book.
We learn about how hard it was for prisoners in that era, how in England, the death penalty was issued for the slightest infraction, and how horrible the voyage to Australia was for those sent there.
We also learn some of what those early days were like. I would have liked to have known how the Australians pulled themselves out of the dire straits of starvation and deprivation, but since the heroine escapes, it’s not part of this book, which is by no means the fault of the author.
I liked that the story was told in the first person, which made it much clearer and easier to follow that way. I wish there had been more information about Mary and Will’s relationship, and her relationship with Mr. Tench, but of course, in those times such personal information would not have been given.
All in all, a very good book that I would recommend.

Title: A story of courage and dignity

Review: Escape from Botany Bay is a tale of courage and perseverance triumphing over cruelty. In the late 1700’s Mary Bryant was sent to Australia on a convict ship for the minor crime of stealing a bonnet. The reader will be appalled at the English judicial system at that time. The penal system was lacking in any humanity and Mary Bryant’s guards were cruel and inhumane to her and the other convicts. Her treatment is an indictment of English society that turned a blind eye to the treatment of its prisoners who were essentially guilty of being born into the lower class and were only guilty of trying to survive in extreme poverty.
Yet, Mary Bryant did not give up hope or relinquish her dignity. Her journey, with a handful of convicts, across a thousand miles of open sea in an open rowboat and her defense against the legal system when she returned to England will inspire the reader. The Hausman’s have done great job of bringing a compelling and worthwhile story to light.

Title: A Rare Five Stars

Review: It takes a lot for me to give a book five stars. Except for this, only David McCullough has received five stars. This book is an epic case of survival not only on land as well as at sea. It presents the mind of a “common criminal” who should be revered as a heroine. Read this book if you care the least about a history so far removed from our present day history.
This is not a book to be missed. As a man it is almost shameful to admit, I had tears in my eyes at the very end. And now I want to know more. Alas there is no mare to know.
In high school we were “forced” to read certain books. This should have been one.

Title: Mary Bryant: Survivor

Review: This little novel was surprisingly good. I loved the narrative voice, and the story was absolutely riveting. There were a few typos and formatting errors in the Kindle version, but these could be forgiven for the compelling content within. The story of Mary, and her journey from English prisons to Botany Bay (Sydney, when it was a penal colony) and then back again are one of the best examples of human survival in conditions where nature and men are intent on returning you to the bottom.
I was really grateful for the authors’ choice in making the more dark elements subtle, and also for skipping time in which nothing happened. The story is written in a diary format but it well-researched. I highly recommend this read to anyone, even people who don’t tend to like nonfiction — it reads like one! Mary’s life was an amazing one.

Title: Good story, okay writing

Review: There are, of course, thousands of stories about the people who settled New South Wales, Tasmania and other parts of the Southern Ocean lands. This is but one of them. It is written in the style of the day only a bit less flowery. In fact, it’s mainly straight, factually-based prose telling the story of Mary Bryant, an early settler there.
How Mary came to survive the journey, make a home in the wild land, and stay healthy is miraculous, yet we know many did. Mary’s experiences are at once harrowing and inspiring. The simple prose belies the human suffering told in the tale.
It’s definitely worth a read, both for the history it presents, and the study of man’s ever-increasing ability to exploit his fellow humans.

Title: A really brilliant read

Review: I read this book in a day with fierce winds and blustery rain… Such an easy fluid book to read, before I new it, I was on the last page.
There were many characters in this book, but Marys strength and hope in surviving was simply stoic, strong in suffering and loss. I hope Mary lived the rest of her life in a carefree state, she deserved it… The history, events and characters made this book one I will remember : )

Review: This book tells the tale of how people can suffer the worst conditions imaginable and survive. I knew little about the British settling of Australia using convicts and after reading this book, I understand why they sent them there and the conditions. Mary was a strong woman who was able to withstand the conditions and overcome the lost of her loved ones. I enjoyed reading about her and how strong she was. This book is for those who like history and stories of human survival against all odds.
