The Meaning of Miracles

People will ask clergy some pretty crazy, impossible questions. Once after church a man asked me if someone handed Jesus a guitar, could he play it?

This question (which I will attempt to answer) reveals a common misunderstanding when it comes to the purpose and place of miracles in the stories we know of Jesus.

To begin with, Jesus never performed miracles to prove his existence. These aren’t tricks. Look closely, people are healed to serve, to be restored to their community, to be reunited, to live. Miracles are for others, not Jesus.

With this in mind, here is my answer to the question, and I believe this with all my heart. If someone handed Jesus a guitar I believe he could play it, and play it well. I also believe he would add: “I’d rather you play it for me…”
