It’s Time to Let Go of Hillary
When I was a kid I lived for going to the public pool in my neighborhood. It was the most fun. I could spend hours and hours in that pool. The refreshing water compared to the dismal Houston summer was the only remedy for the waning days of August before the cold hard world beckoned. There was always that moment during pool day when every kid playing “Shark” in the deep-end would hear the dreaded, boner-killing words from their parent, “Get out of the pool. It’s time to go.”
The great thing about parents and pools was that by the time the parent called you out of the water they had already packed up. Their cover-up was on. The pool bag was loaded on their shoulder and one arm was carrying all of the stuff that one takes away from a successful pool day. The last thing they had to get before leaving was the kid. This left the kid with some power. They knew that mom or dad was not going to jump in and get wet. For a brief moment in time, the kid held the cards.
Eventually threats of spankings and groundings are made. Eventually every kid is coerced out of the pool either by parents or sunset. Eventually it is closing time. In spite of that the kid tries to hold on to one. last. second. of the pool. This is an analogy. Hillary is the pool. Reality is the parent. Democrats and Hillary voters are the kids. And I am hear to say, “It’s time to get out of the pool.”
I know. I know. Trump is going to be impeached or resign or set the world on fire or maybe finish out his dumpster fire of a term (or two). Those points are valid. But Hillary lost.
Yes, she won the popular vote. But Hillary lost.
Yes, it isn’t fair. But Hillary lost.
Yes, the news media is still polling her popularity. This article is intended for them as well. Yes, there are still articles being written about her policy. Yes, her Twitter account is still amazing. But Hillary lost.
In all honesty I cannot remember an election where the loser’s campaign continued this far beyond election day. Usually campaigns are busy wrapping up loose ends and fading back into obscurity. But ever since that bleak Wednesday morning in November it feels like we are still in the heat of the election and that is exactly where Trump and his supporters want us to stay; focused on the past and drinking grape juice at our Hillary pity party. Hell, Trump won and he is the number one guy pleading for one more minute in the the pool with Hills.
However, any grief counselor worth their salt will tell you that dwelling is unhealthy no matter how comforting it may feel. You can’t fight the good fight if you’re still licking old wounds. If we want to look forward we need to stop looking back. What’s another cliche’ I can use for “move on”?
In the last several months I have monitored my own grief. I barely watch the news to this very day. But as I wake up from this hazy gloom I notice that many of my friends are still in it. They are in a despair that is incapacitating. I can’t blame them but I also can’t bare to read another article, tweet, meme about Hillary. Even Hillary has stopped walking the woods. She’s on a national speaking tour and writing a book.
We have got to move on. You too, Fox News. You too, Info Wars. You too, planet Earth. Hillary is not the president and Hillary will never be the President.
Come back!
Sit down, please.
I know. It’s hard to accept. I need you to say it with me.
Hillary…
<repeat after me>
Is not President.
<come on…>
and will never be President.
You can grouse all you want but we will sit here all day if we have to. You can say Trump is “not my President” every day of the week and twice on Sunday but it won’t change the fact that he is, in fact, our President. Just ask the folks that said the same thing about Obama.
This does not mean that you have to support him. In fact I encourage you to resist him and his administration. If this election did anything to me it woke me up from my complacent support of power on both sides of the aisle. I don’t support Trump and I can’t say I am too crazy about government in general. Me and Rand Paul could go get perms and drink beers on the topic.
In all sincerity, I am not trying to condescend to you. I am literally as upset about the whole thing as you are. As everyone is. Even Republicans are upset about this. I mean look at them up in D.C. with all the power but none of the skills. I have yet to see them accomplish anything and now that John McCain has a brain tumor they are in even more of a tailspin. I would find it funny if it weren’t so tragic. I would also find it more concerning if it didn’t mean that we get to keep Obamacare. D.C. is a total mess and that’s a problem. But it doesn’t mean that Hillary is going to save us. We have to save us.
Instead of focusing on the candidate that lost (are you listening Bernie Bros.) we need to find new leaders. Good leaders that lead from the middle. I don’t know who they are exactly but I know who they aren’t and so do you, deep down. Let’s take a page out of the Obama’s playbook and move on with our lives. I am saying this out of love.
Yall, it’s time to get out of the pool. The cold hard world is beckoning.
