Trump Is Not A Joke To Us
After the Washington Nationals won the 2019 World Series they were presented with an opportunity to visit the White House and receive congratulations from the president. Historically, these visits haven’t been the lightening rods they have become in the era of Trump. But then again, almost everything is different in the era of Trump.
During the visit, Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki donned a red MAGA hat and then received a hug from behind by Trump — as if he were an American flag, or anyone that ever encountered Joe Biden.
Well, of course this pissed some people off and made other people very happy. Wild guess who fell on which side. It put a political damper on an otherwise non-event for the team that hadn’t won a World Series in over 90 years.
Kurt Suzuki had to shut down his Twitter account because of the backlash, poor dear. When he was asked how he felt about the negative reaction from the public he explained that he was just trying to have a little “fun” and not make a political statement.
Cue the op-eds.
Aubrey Huff, a former baseball player and conservative Trump supporter told the Washington Post that “The biggest difference between the left and the right is that the right likes to poke fun and make fun of the whole situation and not take things too seriously. The left gets worked up and angry and pissed off.”
This incredulous response from Trump supporters is common. What’s the big deal? It’s just politics. Trump’s just joking. Stop being so serious.
And Huff is right. The left does get worked up and angry and pissed off. Because Trump makes us angry and pissed off. And your little performance where you act like you don’t understand what the big deal is, is obnoxious. And you look like an asshole.
Trump is different from George W. Bush or any previous presidents, including Nixon. We, the left, don’t just hate his politics, we hate him. And he hates us. And that hat says that you’re cool with this man who is actively committing human rights violations right now. Who has abandoned our allies abroad. Who besmirches military heroes. Who lies to the public multiple times a day. Who is a hypocrite about his rampant nepotism. Who talks out of both sides of his mouth about gun control, civil rights, and anything else that is politically expedient. Who has brought Roy Cohn levels of treachery into the highest office in the land. And all while playing the victim to small men who are mad because their brains can’t learn anything new.
Trump, and those damn hats, have been around for a long time now. And I do believe that Suzuki was at game 5 when the fans told Trump exactly how they feel about him via their loud boos. The point being, Suzuki knows what that cap means. He knows how people feel about Trump. And he knew that he was going to get the reaction he did. And that fact that you’re saying he did it for “fun” just means that you acknowledge that Kurt Suzuki is an asshole.
And anyone else that is trying to “have fun” and poke fun at people who think putting kids in cages is terrible is also an asshole. You’re so dense and selfish that you can’t somehow understand how obnoxious your behavior is and how repugnant that makes you appear. And that, my friend, is what I think you’re not dealing with very well.
People like Suzuki seem to be grappling with whether they remain an asshole or using their brains to understand why “the left” might hate Trump. So they say they are just joking when they get called out. It’s immature and the behavior is sophomoric.
I’m not saying this because I want to convince anyone to stop supporting Trump. I am saying this because I want them to stop playing dumb or innocent. I want them to know that many, many people think they are an asshole. And if that bothers them then maybe this revelation will help them grow up a bit.
Or maybe they love it! I don’t know. That seems like something an asshole would enjoy. The point here is that they’re not fooling us with this act.
Trump is terrible.
