I remember reading this back when you wrote it, and finally got to finishing Berseria myself. I completely feel you! It’s kind of inevitable that Tales games culminate in Saving the World, but they’ve rarely connected that plotline to the respective character arc of their protagonist in a way that made giving the protagonist closure or whathaveyou feel just as important as saving the world. I think by starting the conflict and introducing vital A-plot characters at the beginning of the game and keeping it in focus throughout (via Velvet’s raging insistence as much), Berseria managed to keep me invested in its final fight in a way I haven’t felt in the Tales series since the Abyss (which incidentally also started off by introducing a character that wound up being the main antagonist).

You mentioned you and your girlfriend have played through the series as far back as the Abyss. Have you two ever gotten the chance to check out Symphonia? I think it’s a hallmark of the series, not only for being the first 3D one but also for popularizing the series in the west. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it if you two ever play it, and on the rest of the games, and on the series as a whole for that matter!
