I think there is a bit of concern on the use of the term “the West” precisely because its ideological meaning can be universal while the words itself are strictly geographic. I personally support liberal democracy and the belief that it is a great system, though one that we can always seek to improve to make it more representative to citizens’ needs while protecting the rights of minorities and running efficiently.

However, I don’t believe this system is restricted only to states in North America and Western Europe. I understand that presently and in the past these states have been the first ones or the most vocal about these values, but labeling this view “the West” suggests that countries outside of that geographic zone are either unable to adopt these ideals or will struggle with them. This could happen, but removing our bias helps us work to empower them and ensure that liberal democracy does prevail world-wide.
