Totally agree, and I think that’ll be one of the next challenges to tackle. Just look at OpenCollective’s list — there’s a massive inequality between the top sponsored project (Webpack) and everyone else (mostly $0 or $1k/yr.).

Ultimately I think it’ll come down to The Larkin Effect and spending the time to build community and creating ROI for sponsoring your project. As it stands, 99% of open source projects will only receive money as charity at best. The potential future before us takes cues from Kickstarter, Twitch, Patreon, etc. as a way to create both sustainability and a fair shot for any project at getting funding if they put in the work and evangelism.
