Mercy. Hospitality. Generosity. Peace. Hope. Forgiveness. Justice. Grace. Reconciliation. All words that unpack what we find when we look closely at the cross of Jesus the Nazarene. It is oxymoronic that a cross should represent such words but these are precisely the words followers of Jesus use to describe that event. Bloodshed, tears, pain, violence, division, alienation, hopelessness, and betrayal are all evident in the crucifixion. The cross represents the reality and presence of such things, but also an exodus through the deep waters to the other side of such things. It is no mere religion; it is the shifting of history on its axis and the call to follow; the call to hope and trust.
