Zayn Maliks “Pillowtalk” Music Video

The former One Direction singer, Zayn Malik, came out with a new music video called “Pillowtalk” just four days ago. The video is already up to 33 million views in those four days. The song itself is about an interaction and possibly a relationship with another person. Zayn does a great job actually portraying the ups and downs of a relationship. His lyrics throughout the song are comparing complete opposites. There are many lines such as “we’ll go slow and high tempo” or “I’m seeing the pain, seeing the pleasure” which are referring to the good and bad times that come with a relationship. Zayn says that this interaction will cause pleasure but also create pain between the two parties. He is describing the interaction as a roller coaster ride. The lyrics really show both side of the experience, with the highest of highs and the painful and exhausting lows. I can almost guarantee that Kiss 108 will be playing this song regularly because it is right in their wheelhouse. It’s an extremely catchy song that people can dance to. If you look at the actual lyrics there is barely anything to the song besides the chorus. There are two versus that consist of seventeen words and thirteen words respectively. There isn’t much meat in the song but people now a day’s only really care about if the public will enjoy it.

The video itself starts off extremely dark and switches camera angles constantly. Once the song hits the chorus the camera angles switch somewhat rapidly and a psychedelic background is introduced. Throughout the song they do a good job switching camera angles with the beat. One thing that I really enjoyed about the music video is that during the chorus of the song everything is very chaotic. They show many things such as flowers leaking (2:55) or a girl screaming and smashing a guitar (2:40). The background is also mostly filled with black or red colors, which are the two colors that represent evil and fighting. Both of these do a good job depicting the “war zone” aspect that Zayn sings about.

Overall though, I believe that they were trying to do too much with this music video. With Zayn leaving One Direction recently I think they were trying to release a catchy tune and a great music video to match it; it ended up being too much. As I said before, I can see the song itself being a radio hit because of the catchiness and the beat, but in my opinion the music video was way over done. They switched the camera angles too many times and created too many backgrounds. For the first minute of the video the camera changes, on average, just about every three seconds. The video also introduces thirteen different backgrounds in the first minute. For me, I enjoyed the song but the music video was too spazy and they clearly tried to do too much.
