Swift Basics — Week 1

Setting Up Tools

Each week I’ll explain an iOS development concept in bite size chunks using Swift. We’re starting from the most basic of concepts, and we’ll continue slowly each week till we can make full fledge iOS apps. My intention is to prove that anyone has the ability to code, it doesn’t matter what background you came from. If you are dedicated and determined you can code like the best of them.

My articles will be designed to be read in 10 to 20 minutes that way anyone can find time to learn. As more complicated topics come up, I’ll provide you with videos and articles so that you can find a way to learn a concept that works for you. This will be a long journey that will fill you with accomplishment and I hope to be with you every step of the way.

Are you ready? Let’s get started.

Getting Started

For my articles, you’ll need two things

  1. A Mac
  2. An application called Xcode

How to download Xcode:

Let’s open up your Mac. Down on the dock, there will be an icon for the Mac App Store.
Open the Mac App Store and search for Xcode on the top right.
Click “Get”.
Type in your Apple ID and password. Typically your Apple ID is an email address. If you don’t know the password go to iforgot.apple.com .
Wait for the download, it may take an hour or more, it’s a large file. To check the progress, open Launchpad, or the Applications folder.
Once it finishes, Open Xcode and click File > New > Playground in the top left.
You can save the Playground anywhere, the Desktop will be a convenient place for you to reach it later.
I’ll leave you with this cliff hanger for now. Feel free to explore Xcode! See you next week!
